privacy policy

Older Online (a.k.a. OlderOnline.com) is committed to safeguarding your privacy online. Please read the following policy to understand how your personal information will be treated as you make full use of our many offerings. This policy may change from time to time so please check back periodically.

This policy will let you know:
  1. What personally identifiable information is collected from you;
  2. What cookies are, and how they are used;
  3. How your information is used;
  4. Who is collecting your information;
  5. With whom your information may be shared;
  6. What choices are available to you regarding collection, use, and distribution of your information;
  7. How you can access, update or delete your information;
  8. The kind of security precautions that are in place to protect the loss, misuse, or alteration of your information;
  9. What else you should know about your online privacy.

1. What personally identifiable information does Older Online collect from me?

Older Online collects information in several ways from different parts of our network of web sites.

Some personal information is gathered when you register or renew your membership. During this process, Older Online asks for your name, address, email address, zip code, telephone (optional), and billing information (if applicable). Once you register, and your account is processed, you are no longer anonymous to Older Online - you are given a Older Online ID ("Username") and are able to take full advantage of Older Online's many offerings.

In addition to registration we may ask you for personal information at other times, including (but not limited to) when you enter a sweepstakes, contest or promotion sponsored by Older Online and/or our many partners; when you make a purchase using Older Online online-store; you post a Older Online Personal ad; when you submit a listing for a web site; and when you report a problem with one of our sites or services.

If you contact Older Online we may keep a record of that correspondence. Older Online also occasionally asks users to complete surveys that we use for research purposes. Wherever Older Online collects personal information we make an effort to include a link to this Privacy Policy on that page.

2. What are cookies and how does Older Online use them?

As part of offering and providing customizable and personalized services, Older Online uses cookies to store and track information about your site preferences and logon session. A cookie is a small amount of data that is sent to your browser from a web server and stored on your computer's memory (session cookies) or hard drive (file cookies).

Please note that Older Online NEVER stores personal information on either session or file cookies.

Older Online uses a session (memory) cookie to maintain a member logon state on the site. This allows the server to know when you are logged on, and not prompt you for a username and password every time you access a member restricted section of the site.  Please note that no information is saved to your hard drive with session cookies. Session cookies are maintained in your browser's memory and readable only by our servers.  Session cookies are erased when you close your browser, logout, or let your session timeout.

Older Online uses a file cookie to store some of your site preferences, so they can be re-implemented in your session the next time you visit your site.  Some examples include storing gallery settings such as displaying the thumbnail index in different sizes (small, medium, large), or saving your username or chat nickname so you don't have to re-type it again next time you visit the site. None of the information stored in this file cookie is personal. Only the Older Online servers can access this file cookie, and read its information.

Generally, we MAY use cookies to:

  1. Remind us of who you are and to access your account information (stored on our servers) in order to deliver to you a better and more personalized service. This cookie is set when you register or "Login" and is modified when you "Logout" of our services.

  2. Estimate our audience size. Each browser accessing Older Online is given a unique cookie which is then used to determine the extent of repeat usage, usage by a registered user versus by an unregistered user, and to help target advertisements based on user interests and behavior.

  3. Measure certain traffic patterns, which areas of Older Online's network of web sites you have visited, and your visiting patterns in the aggregate. We use this research to understand how our users' habits are similar or different from one another so that we can make each new experience on Older Online a better one. We may use this information to better personalize the content, banners, and promotions that you and other users will see on our sites.

Older Online also collects IP addresses for system administration and to report aggregate information to our advertisers.

3. How does Older Online use my information?
